Sobre o Autor

António da Conceição Fernandes nasceu em Madalena - Vila Nova de Gaia, em 1952. Estudou em Portugal e em França. Tirou o curso de Gemologia e especializou-se no mundo da alta joalharia. Estudou, durante cinco anos, desenho técnico e artístico, criou vários modelos de joalharia, tendo sido premiado com O Kippkool original ouro/diamante “o modelo mais nobre da colecção Lionel Fairbanks”. Em 1980 experimentou a pintura a óleo, tendo desenvolvido alguns estudos e diversas técnicas. Fascinado pelas obras de Boucher e Fragonard, reproduziu algumas, entre elas “Banho de Diana” e “Coroação do Amor” Em 1984 desenvolveu alguns trabalhos de grafite e aguarelas. Regressou a Portugal em 1988, passando a residir em Cós.

A sua sensibilidade pela História e pelo rico património existente no concelho de Alcobaça, e nomeadamente na freguesia de Cós, levou-o a empreender algumas iniciativas inovadoras, tendo sido dos primeiros artistas plásticos a dedicar uma parte muito significativa dos seus trabalhos a Cós e à sua freguesia. As suas aguarelas manifestaram a preocupação quanto à orientação e à preservação do património existente, bastante desolador em certos locais, dado o desinteresse tantas vezes demosnstrado pelas pessoas e instituições ao longo dos tempos. Foi responsável durante a década de 1990 pela secção cultural da Associação Desportiva e Cultural de Cós, colectividade a que presidiu entre 2001 e 2003, período que ficou marcado por uma intensa actividade cultural e desportiva em Cós. Entre outras actividades contam-se a organização em 2002/3 do 1º concurso de vestidos de chita de Cós, iniciativa que contou com o apoio da Câmara Municipal de Alcobaça, e, no campo desportivo, a fundação da academia Shotokan Karatedo de Cós. Participou ao longo da sua carreira artística em várias exposições individuais e colectivas.

About the author

António da Conceição Fernandes was born in Madalena - Vila Nova de Gaia (Northern Portugal), in 1952. He studied in both Portugal and France, where he got his Gemmology course and where he specialised in Jewellery. He studied also, for five years, technical and art design, period during which he created several jewellery works. He was awarded the Kippkool original gold/diamond “the noblest model of Lionel Fairbanks collection”. In 1980 he made his first oil painting experiments, developing some studies using several techniques. Fascinated by the works of Boucher and Fragonard, he reproduced some of their famous paintings, such as “Diana leaving her bath” and “Coronation of love” In 1984 he produced also some graphite and watercolour works. He returned to Portugal in 1988, electing Cós as his living place.

Fernandes’ sensibility for History was the ground for his interest in the study of the extremely rich cultural and monumental inheritance present in Alcobaça municipality, and namely in Cós. This granted him the status of being one of the first Portuguese artists whose works were to a great extent dedicated to Cós. Fernandes’ splendid watercolours show also his awareness regarding the preservation of cultural inheritance, given the lack of care so frequently shown by local people and political institutions in the past. António Fernandes was responsible in the nineties for the culture department of Associação Desportiva e Cultural de Cós, a local organisation which he chaired between 2001 and 2003. Amongst other activities developed in such very active period, one can mention the organisation in 2002/03 of the first local contest of “Chita dresses” (“Chita” is natural cotton-based textile material), and in the sports field the foundation of Cós Shotokan Karatedo Academy. In his life as an artist he participated in several collective and individual exhibitions.

Nesta mostra, com trabalhos dedicados exclusivamente a Cós, António Fernandes expôs uma selecção de desenhos e aguarelas realizados ao longo das últimas décadas.

About the exhibition

In this exhibition António Fernandes presents a selection of drawings and watercolours made in the last two decades, having Cós as central theme. The exhibition will be open to the general public (entrance free of charge). It will be officially opened in the afternoon on the 10th of May 2008 and it will last until the 10th of June 2008. The exhibition timetable will be:

Monday: closed
Tuesday to Sunday: 14:00-23:00
